The Reut
Kirkwood

About this zone
The Reut sits just below The Wall and skis like its slightly mellower, more lap-friendly sibling. It’s still solidly black terrain, but the pitch eases off enough to open things up and let you move. Expect a mix of wide groomers and natural snow where you can dip in and out of trees, with good fall-line skiing and room to spread out. It’s accessible both from above and straight from Mountain Village, which makes it one of the more versatile advanced zones at Kirkwood.
Best When
This zone shines when you want fast, repeatable laps without committing to The Wall’s upper steepness. The mostly north-facing aspect and slightly lower elevation help preserve snow quality, especially mid-winter and after storms. It’s a good call when visibility is mediocre up high or when you want to ski aggressively but efficiently. If you’re skiing with a mixed-ability group, you can push skier’s right for black terrain or trend left toward Buckboard to tone it down.
Watch Out For
While less intimidating than The Wall, it’s still steep enough to demand attention, especially when firm or scraped off. Groomers here can get very fast, and the transition zones near the trees can hide variable snow. Crowds funneling up from Mountain Village can build during peak hours, and the flatter lower sections punish complacency if you carry too much speed.
