Covered Wagon
Kirkwood

About this zone
Covered Wagon is Kirkwood’s farthest-out inbounds zone, tucked deep on the backside beneath Covered Wagon Peak. It feels remote and quiet, with a long traverse mindset and a “commit once you’re there” vibe. Access comes via Capels’ Crest to the backside, then Sunrise, where you head skier’s left and stay high. The terrain mixes open alpine lines near the ridge with rolling fall lines and scattered trees as you descend, all draining back toward Sunrise and the Devil’s Draw side of the mountain.
Best When
This zone shines when the backside is open and snow quality is the priority. Its mostly north-facing aspect holds cold snow well after storms and resists sun damage during dry stretches. It’s a good choice for strong skiers looking to get away from crowds and are willing to traverse or hike a bit for better snow. Midday laps work well once visibility improves, especially if you’re patient enough to stay high and pick your drop.
Watch Out For
The upper ridge near Covered Wagon Peak has real exposure: cornices, overhangs, and steep rollovers demand attention, especially if you hike higher. Route choice matters, and it’s easy to wander too far skier’s right and slip out of bounds. Lower down, the terrain mellows toward Devil’s Draw and Fawn Ridge, but flat light and wind can make the upper sections tricky. Know where you are, stay oriented, and don’t rush the entry.
