Alpine Bowl
Alpine Meadows

About this zone
Alpine Bowl is classic above-treeline skiing: a broad, steep bowl where you can move around to find the pitch and exposure you want. It’s straightforward, open terrain that rewards strong edging when it’s firm and gives you plenty of room to open it up when it’s soft. If you’re hunting for snow that’s starting to loosen up, the east-facing Sunspot is the obvious place to look.
Best When
This zone is at its best after a solid storm cycle when it hasn’t been wind-scoured and you’re looking for clean, chalky turns. On colder or firmer days, it’s a good place to sample conditions before committing, then slide over to Sunspot when you want earlier warming and a little softening without leaving the bowl.
Watch Out For
High-elevation alpine snow is fickle here. Expect crust, frozen chop, and firm patches when the surface has been worked by wind or temperature swings, and the runouts can feel quick if you get bounced out of balance. Visibility can go flat fast near the crest, so keep your speed and line choices in check when the light goes away.
